Nuakhai, "eating the new", is the harvest festival of western Odisha, kept on the day after Ganesh Chaturthi. The first of the new paddy is offered to the presiding goddess of the place, Samaleswari at Sambalpur, Pataneswari at Balangir, Manikeswari at Bhawanipatna, at an exact hour fixed in advance. Then every family eats the new rice together, and the young bow to the old: Nuakhai Juhar.
The story
The festival has nine named stages, from the fixing of the date to the farewell. At its heart is the idea that nobody eats the new crop before the goddess has, and that everybody then eats it at once.
It is the homecoming of the west. People who work in distant cities travel back to their villages, and Nuakhai Bhetghat gatherings are held wherever western Odias live.
